VHE creates beautiful and functional boxes from wood. They would look great your on your mantel, in the bedroom on the dresser or in your what-not display. All boxes include lined drawers. In fact there are three types of drawers in VHE boxes. There are the obvious drawers on the front of the box. There are hidden drawers not visible from the front. Some of the boxes even have a secret drawer hidden deep inside the box. All drawers are lined and fully functional.
VHE does not use stains or dyes to treat the color of the wood. We are confident you will be amazed when you view the richness and incredible color of the boxes. She finished the boxes with natural waxes and that protects the beauty of the box and gives them a smooth natural feel. Many box makers use a polyurethane finish which is basically taking a natural object and encapsulating it in plastic. The result looks cold and artificial in the view of Van Horn.
Customers that visit us at art festivals suggest our work should be in art galleries and we have been invited to present our work by gallery owners. One of our elderly customers said "I have been going to art festivals for 30 years and I have never seen anything like your work"
Van Horn has developed unique design, laminating, cutting, sanding and finishing methods that result in incredible one-of-a-kind creations. Sculptured boxes are formed using a powerful band saw. This requires the wood piece to have flat surfaces on the front and back to safely and effectively make the saw cuts. As a result most band saw boxes are flat on the front. Van Horn has developed techniques that free her of this constraint and you will see boxes below that have a dramatic three dimensional front. You can see the dramatic effect of her 3D technique in the photo and the left side of this page.
Natural Edge Maple Burl Box
This striking two drawer box is a testimonial to the beauty of nature and the skills of Van Horn that produced this beautiful creation. It would look great on a fireplace mantel in your home. We travel extensively and seek out small Mom-and-Pop sawmills so we can search their inventory for unique and beautiful pieces. Van Horn carefully evaluates each piece to design a box that would compliment the beauty of the wood.
The dimensions of this box is 11" wide X 8.5" high X 4" deep.
This unique box is made from Cocobolo which comes from the Tropics of Central America. It is becoming increasingly rare and as a result very expensive. This box has a hidden drawer and also a secret drawer. Customers are delighted when we "let them in on our secret" and show them the hidden drawer.
Van Horn took her inspiration for this design from a droplet of rain striking a puddle of water and sending up a spray. The box includes three separate pieces. The base which includes two splashes, the lower shaped section which includes the hidden drawer and the middle section which includes the hidden drawer. (as shown in second photo above.)
Dimensions of the box is: 9"wide X 5" wide X 2.75"deep
This box is named after Van Horn's sister who is a dedicated tree lover. This box reminds us of several huge live oak trees on our property near Angleton Texas. We have several trees that have a diameter of 8 to 9 feet at their the base and their branches extend over 120 feet. Two of the trees cover over half an acre.
This box is made from Walnut and Birdseye maple. We spend our summers in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan near the Canadian border. The are is known for the best Birdseye maple in the world.
The box dimensions are: 10" wide X 7.5" high X 3" deep.
VHE's Fern box is one of her most popular boxes. It is easy to see why as it is both beautiful and functional. It has the most drawers of any box and is great to sort and story your small treasures. The drawers in all VHE boxes are finished and lined. Almost all of VHE's boxes feature natural wood with no stains or other forms of artificial coloring. The paint wash on the fern box is a rare exception which enhances the beauty of the box. The box is made of Cherry. Cherry is one of the domestic woods we source from small sawmills that focus on processing downed trees.
Van Horn is constantly searching for new and different ideas to create a unique box design. Leggs is an example of art and function. The long leggs and exaggerated fall away handle is an example of her creativity. The wood is cocobolo which exceptional color and grain. Van Horn brings out the natural beauty of the wood spending hours sanding finishing and polishing each piece. Her finishes are natural allowing the wood to breathe and maintain its beauty. She does not use polyurethane or other treatments as this simply seals the wood in plastic. Her finishing process includes a several step hand waxing process.
Here is a Zebrawood Leggs Box. The same design but a very different look.
Dimensions: 5.5" wide X 4.75" high X 3.5" deep
Cost: $125.00 plus $5.00 shipping
If you compare the dimensions of the two boxes with the same design you will see the dimensions vary even though the design is the same. Van Horn laminates wood as the starting point for her box. She then evaluates each block to develop a design that most compliments the beauty of the wood. She adjusts the size of the box to match the size of the block of wood.
VHE's Pineapple box displays the beauty of the wood with no visible drawers or handles. It looks like a beautiful wood sculpture but as you can see in the photo above it is a box with a hidden drawer on the side of the pull out section and also a hidden drawer on the back of the pull out.
As you have probably guessed by now when you design your own boxes you have to deal with the challenge of naming them. We called this the "Manly Box" but realized when building the website that might not be a good idea for two reasons. First it sounds a little sexist and secondly the original name would tend to eliminate at least half your customers. So I decided to come up with the create unisex name shown above.
The second picture is a view of the box from the top and is the perspective you would have of the box was sitting on your chest-a-drawers. Actually the bottom of the box is even prettier than the top. Van Horn says you never know what you will find as you cut, finish and polish a block of wood. It is like opening an oyster and finding a beautiful pearl. She says that is part of the fun of working with wood.
This fabulous box is a brand new design which takes her designs to a new level. It is a cross over between an art sculpture and a sculptured box. Van Horn works with both a lathe making the round ball seen here and a bandsaw box which sculpts the box. Van Horn first started making pens and then took on the challenge of creating sculptured boxes. She applied her knowledge at finishing pens to finishing boxes. This is a lidded box which is lined inside. The ball is wood as well. It started as a block of wood made by laminating thin layers of colored together. As Van Horn turned the block the colored pattern emerges. There is always an "eye" shape on both sides of the ball.
This four drawer box is made from oak with cocobolo handles. The square corners and shape stand in contrast to the more flowing foxes in the VHE inventory. The unique drawer on the side makes this piece standout as well.
The unique Double E box is made of Ambrosia wood. It is interesting to observe the reaction to customers when they enter out booth at art festivals to see and frequently touch our boxes. It is apparently a natural human reaction to reach out and stroke the top of a box like this one to experience the smooth curves.
